Unreal for Games

MONDAYS 6:15 – 10:00pm

6/2/25 to 6/23/25

Anyone interested in the creative process of making a video game without the conventional process of writing code? Blueprints are the logic containers in Unreal Engine, and they are powerful tools for controlling assets and developing experiences. So learning Unreal Engine Blueprints is essential for game design.

Some familiarity with Unreal Engine’s Blueprints feature helps, but is not necessary. We will walk you through the industry standards of game development using Blueprints, and you will become familiar with the most cutting edge tools, all while building a game together.  In this class you will learn how to:

  • Initialize GitKraken for version control. Blueprints overview. Build and test a versatile health component.
  • Create checkpoints, a power up and win volume. A deeper look at variable types and how to use them.
  • Learn to use NavMesh, have objects in your level spawn in waves and follow you around causing damage.
  • Creative interpretation of the mechanics and level design. Full game loop presentation.

Packed with information, this class is designed to encourage a creative approach to engineering and game design through the use of Unreal Engine and practice. Also, we will provide  a treasure trove of reference material and walk through the use of ChatGPT as a support system for learning and solving problems.

Prerequisite: Working knowledge of Unreal Engine is highly recommended.  Be aware that Unreal Engine 5.4 requires that you have a 2020 or newer Mac or PC with 8 GB of VRAM and at least 16 GB of RAM.  A large screen monitor (2 is best!) and the use of a full keyboard with a 3-button mouse is essential, especially for anyone using a laptop.
