Digital Sketch & Draw

An integral part of  VFX, especially in the world of CGI characters & sets, is digital sketching. From character design to digital matte painting, sketching serves as a foundational base for artists in film production, video games, television.

This class will focus on showcasing the different digital processes used to create a solid sketch or drawing that effectively communicates an idea. Students will learn how to approach different types of subject matter such as plants, animals, characters, creatures and props with various digital drawing techniques used by concept artists, storyboard artists, illustrators, industrial designers and the many others positions involved in the design and production for film, television, video games, and all other major forms of media.

Learning to sketch with software such as Adobe Photoshop, Procreate or other digital drawing products is perfect for animators, BG painters, costume designers, makeup artists and other aspiring artists and professionals who desire to gain mileage in learning how to draw digitally as well as draw everything.

Topics covered will be digital sketching of organic and non-organic subject matter, texturing, the different approaches of drawing, the dissection of style, the importance of form, value and simplifying value, building up a silhouette, custom brushes, color, material indication, light logic, and so much more. Primary software used will be Adobe Photoshop. Our main drawing tool will be the Wacom Pen and Tablet.

Duration: 8 weeks – 30 hours

Prerequisite: This class can be taken with a Mac, PC or an iPad!  You can use Photoshop on your computer or Procreate if you have an iPad.  It is recommended that you have a large screen to work on… Even better if you have two monitors!
