Digital Matte Painting

In this 8-week series, we’ll be teaching you the many ways Digital Matte Painting is used in today’s TV and film Postproduction. It can often provide visual and technical solutions that would be too expensive or time consuming to accomplish in other Visual Effects departments - and especially to shoot for real in live action - which is what it’s always been about!

From futuristic cityscapes to historic period pieces, we’ll introduce how Matte Painting is used with 2.5D camera projection, creating set extensions, making clean plates, working with 3D, creating new elements for compositing, sky replacements, enhancing lighting, and swapping day-for-night.  Plus integrating with 3D and compositing the whole time!

Prerequisite: This is an intermediate course, so good working knowledge of Photoshop, 3D, and composting are essential. Not least, you must understand composition, lighting, perspective, and design!

Instructor Bio: Tim Matney is a Digital Matte Painter and veteran Visual Effects Artist, whose work has appeared in many feature films, TV shows, commercials, and games.  He began his career as a 3D Generalist in computer games, then transitioned to feature films, where he discovered Matte Painting and his affinity for it.  He found his skills as a CG Generalist, eye for color and detail, and ability to paint/manipulate in Photoshop made for a natural progression into Digital Matte Painting.
